IU Ethics Issues

When students at Indiana University are charged with criminal offenses, they must often answer to allegations of violations of the Student Ethics Code. The Indiana University Office of Student Ethics may initiate disciplinary proceedings. This process is completely separate from the criminal justice system, but can result in serious repercussions.

The burden of proof that Indiana University uses to determine responsibility for violations of their Ethics Code is a preponderance of the evidence, which is a lower burden than what is required for a finding of guilt in the criminal system. As a result, students are more easily adjudicated ‘responsible’ under this framework.

In certain circumstances, allegations of violations of the ethics code should be taken as seriously as criminal charges, as a student’s future at the University, or their ability to transfer may be compromised. It is prudent to seek the advice of Counsel in these situations.
